Shellie Rushing Tomlinson
Happy Valentines Day from Coon Creek! Please, take a break
with me on the porch. If you haven't ordered roses and picked
out your cards by now you might as well--it's a good chance
you're already in trouble. Besides, I've even got a few tips
scattered in here that might help keep you out of the doghouse
for good.~smile~
Judging by the mail generated by last week's initial run of
All Things Southern's new temporary feature, "You Must Have
Been a Girly-Girl", there's a good sample of girly-girls AND
tomboys meeting here on the porch each week. Mercy, I hope
we don't have a turf war brewing! Please know that I intend
to face this volatile situation bravely and proceed with our
new feature, (at least for a few weeks).
Keep those letters coming. Let me know what you like and what
you don't like, what you want more of and less of. I can't say
I'll please everyone, but I can say I'll try!
Hugs,
Shellie

"Fading Attraction"
An elderly couple was driving across the country. While the
woman was behind the wheel, the couple was pulled over by the
highway patrol.
"Ma'am, did you know you were speeding?" the officer said.
The woman, hard of hearing, turned to her husband and asked,
"What did he say?"
"He said you were speeding!" the old man yelled.
The patrolman then asked, "May I see your license?"
The woman turned to her husband again, "What did he say?"
The old man yelled back, "He wants to see your license!"
The woman then gave the officer her license.
"I see you are from Arkansas," the patrolman said. "I spent
some time there once and went on a blind date with the ugliest
woman I've ever seen."
The woman turned to her husband again and asked, "What did
he say?"
The old man replied, "He said he knows you!"

"A Taste of the South"
When I was a little girl, few things said "love" to me like
the smell of Mama's meat loaf. Hopefully your Valentine is
stealing you away from the kitchen this evening, but maybe
tomorrow night you can show your family you love 'em with
this satisfying southern staple.
Mama's Meat Loaf
2 slices bread/ crumbled in small pieces
12 to 15 saltine crackers/ crushed
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 teaspoons seasoned salt
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 bell pepper/chopped
1 onion/chopped
2 pounds ground chuck
Use a large mixing bowl to combine all ingredients and
work into two loaves. Bake at 325 degrees for about an hour or
until completely done in the center. (Some cooks like to
spread tomato paste over the top of the loaves before cooking.
My mom used ketchup and my sisters and I loved the added
flavor. I was grown before I found out this wasn't standard
procedure!)

"Spotlight on the South"
SPOTLIGHT ON MID-SOUTH FARM & GIN SHOW
March 1st-2nd, 2002 at the Memphis Cook Convention Center
The Mid-South Farm & Gin Show is not your run-of-the-mill
educational, agricultural show. With attendanance
running from 9,000 to 15,000 over the last 10 years, this
success story continues to prove itself as THE Agricultural
Show. The first weekend in March will signal this year's
annual trek as thousands of leading farmers, ginners,
equipment manufacturers and their friends and families
descend on Memphis, Tennessee for farming's big weekend. Find
more info at http://www.southerncottonginners.org/upcoming.htm
I can't close this spotlight without mentioning the Peabody
Hotel. This grand hotel of the south is always linked
to the Gin Show and even if you can't manage a coveted
reservation the weekend of the big show, you should make
plans to visit.
For all its history and grand tradition, nothing is more
symbolic of The Peabody than its world-famous ducks, who
spend part of every day swimming in the Grand Lobby fountain.
In 1998, the Peabody Ducks had the distinction of being honored
by Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International
(HSMAI) with "The Lifetime Achievement Award". The Ducks'
lifetime of achievement actually began as a joke.
In the 1930s, General Manager Frank Schutt was returning from
a weekend hunting trip to Arkansas. Schutt and his friends
thought it would be humorous to place some of their live
duck decoys (it was legal for hunters to use live decoys)
in the Peabody fountain. Three small English call ducks
were selected to be the guinea pigs, and the reaction was
nothing short of enthusiastic. Since then, Ducks have been
in the fountain every day.
In 1940, Bellman Edward Pembroke, formerly a circus animal
trainer, volunteered to care for the ducks and taught them
to march into the Lobby - initiating the famous "March."
Today, the mallards are raised by a local farmer and
friend of the hotel. They live in the lavish "Duck Palace"
on the roof. Every day at 11 a.m., they're led by the Duckmaster
down the elevator to the Italian Travertine marble fountain
in the Grand Lobby. Red carpet is unrolled and the ducks march
through crowds of admiring spectators to the tunes of John
Philip Sousa. The fanfare is repeated at 5 p.m. when the ducks
retire to their rooftop palace. You can make your reservations
AND see the ducks at: http://www.peabodymemphis.com/home.html

"Southern Comfort"
Valentines Day is all about the love between a man and a
woman. Allow me to bring you I Corinthians Chapter 13. It's
all about love, too--the greatest Love of all. The words in
parenthesis are mine. ~Shellie
"Love is of God"
Love is kind and suffers long.
(For Jesus was tortured who knew no sin and asked His Father
to forgive His persecutors.)
Love does not envy, nor is it puffed up or proud.
(For God took the form of man to provide a sacrifice
for our sins.)
Love does not behave unseemingly or seek its' own.
(For Jesus prayed, "Not my will but thine, Lord".)
Love is not easily provoked or quick to evil.
(For Jesus was tempted forty days in the wilderness and
knew no sin.)
Love rejoices not in iniquity but in truth.
(For Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.)
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,
and endures all things. And Love never fails...
(For God is love, and love is of God.)
And now there is faith, hope and love; but the greatest
of these is love.

"Southern Exchange"
Dear Readers,
Your letters educate, entertain and challenge me. This
first one is a good example of the humor I get to
enjoy each week. The second is a request from one of our
heroes in the armed forces. Since y'all were so quick
to help our northern guest, I thought I'd run this one
by you. Thanks~Shellie
Your letters:
Shellie,
I have registered for the gator get-a-way, but just out of
curiosity--I'm not sure what I registered for. Now, in my
time I have wrestled a few ring tail tooters, (am not, nor
will ever be a girly-girl), but I'm not going to have to
wrestle any gators if I win this thing, am I? I'm not as
young as I used to be! My husband will really question me if
I come home with my clothes ripped. He's so funny about that.
So where do I go to find out what I really registered for?

Shellie,
I'm from Kentucky originally, but I'm currently in the Air Force
deployed at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait. Every Wednesday
night here we have "Open Mike Night". I've seen in the past
a humorous letter that I think is titled, "Letter from Home."
It's about a Southern boy that moves away and receives a
letter from home that has all the stereotypes of what people
think about the South.
I'd love to read this letter on a Wednesday night for my fellow
troops here in Kuwait to cheer them up. I can't find it on
the net. Can you help? If you could help me with this I'm sure
we could all get a much needed laugh from it.
Thanks,
Tom Poplin
