       From the Publisher's Porch

        Shellie Rushing Tomlinson

Happy Easter Week to all my porch friends! I've been looking forward to our visit. Guess what? I'm proud to report that All Things Southern is in the business of reconciliation. Just last week I reunited yet another set of long lost friends/cousins. Each reunion has come as a result of a letter posted in the "Southern Exchange". Note to all: Don't worry, I'm careful not to send out your email address. Instead, I forward the request for contact to the searchee and let them decide whether to respond to the searcher! Oh, I feel so....useful. ~smile~

The truth is, I'm just all warm and fuzzy today. It must be Easter! I've been reminiscing about starched dresses with big ruffles and pink sponge rollers, straw baskets filled with goodies and Easter sunrise services followed by hot cocoa and doughnuts. Have any of you been there? I thought so!

All right, I'm going to let you get on with this week's Southern tribute, but before I go, can I leave you with the sweetest sentiment I've heard in a while? It's a direct quote from Ainsley Oliver, 10 yrs. old, to her grandmother, Wanda Oliver. "Nana, if you ever die, I want to get a bottle of your perfume so I can still smell you." I hope Ainsley's intention leaves a smile on your face and brings back a cherished smell to your memory! It did for me.

Hugs,
Shellie

~~Chuckles~~

"Accents"

Have you heard the one about the little boy from Virginia with the Wisconsin relatives? One day he asked his mom why all their relatives talk funny and sound like their noses are plugged up.

"People from different places talk in different ways," his mom explained. "But, you have to understand that to them we sound like we talk very slow and all of our words are d-r-a-w-n out."

The little boys eyes got big, and he whispered seriously, "Oh, no. You mean they hear funny too?"

~~A Taste of the South~~

I just took this dish out of the oven. Although, it looked like a nice addition to Easter dinner, I wanted to try it before recommending it to the porch. I can now say without hesitation: it's delicious. (If you aren't as crazy as I am about jalapenos, you might want to cut the peppers down a bit. It is on the warm side.)

"Southern Jalapeno Quiche"

• 1 jar sliced jalapeno peppers drained and diced
• 3 eggs beaten (I used four because mine looked small)
• 2 cups cheddar cheese grated
• salt and pepper to taste

Place diced peppers in a greased nine inch pie plate. Sprinkle with cheese. Pour beaten eggs over the top and season to taste with salt and pepper. Cook for 20 minutes at 400'. (I think I'll add some diced ham next time! Yum!)

~~Spotlight on the South~~

SPOTLIGHT ON THE GREAT PASSION PLAY AT EUREKA SPRINGS
2002 Season: April 26-October 26

Although I haven't been to the Passion Play in Eureka Springs since I was a teenager, I still carry the memories with me. You will, too. I urge you to set aside a few vacation days to make your way to Arkansas for the experience of a lifetime.

Beginning April the 26th and running through October the 26th, a cast of 250 actors and actresses will present "The Great Passion Play", a two-hour epic performance of the life of Jesus Christ. Join the millions of people who have shared this life-changing event. You'll enjoy state of the art sound and lighting in this historical account of the gospel, complete with everything from camels to angels, as you're led to the miraculous resurrection of Jesus and his ascension into the night sky.

I don't think a cyber trip will do this spotlight justice, but here's a website for you to get more information, purchase tickets in advance and see pictures of all the other attractions awaiting you at "The Great Passion Play in Eureka Springs".

~~Southern Comfort~~

The image I'll never forget, nor the sounds of
agony, as I watched Him struggle up the hill
to His death at Calvary.
On a wooden cross they nailed Him, a crown of
thorns they made in jest; from a precious few came
wailing, but cheers came from the rest.

He hung between two criminals with a sign above
his head. "This is Jesus, King of the Jews," the
mocking letters read.
His gaze, dare you meet it, would root you to the ground.
For void was it of bitterness, no anger could be found.

He asked for drink to quench His thirst,
but vinegar he received. And then I heard Him speak
to the heavens and His words I couldn't believe.
For there in all His sorrow He asked forgiveness
for his foes. I couldn't fathom how such love
survived the cruel, countless blows.

When at last, all scripture fulfilled, He bowed
His head and died--the veil was rent, the earth
quaked and the rocks split open wide.
The Chief Priests shook within their skins; the
grave had claimed this "King". But, where was the relief
they had expected his death to bring? Three days lay
Jesus in the tomb and each day their tension eased.
Surely the threat was over--victory had been seized.

I knew before I heard it! I felt it in the air. Mary
had been to the tomb and Jesus wasn't there! At last--
I could believe. I had so wanted it to be. This man
was truly the Messiah and I had watched Him die for me.

As word spread fast and furiously and people ran
to see, I opened my heart to Jesus, the man from Galilee.

Your letters:

Hello Everyone!

I stumbled...or was guided...onto this wonderful website about a week ago. I was born in Ft. Rucker, Alabama and moved when I was 6 months old. I'm from a military family. I have never been back but have always felt a tug in my heart for the South. I'm drawn to warm weather, front porches, sweet iced tea and big, beautiful flowers. Right now I live in Maryland but I hope to visit the South again soon. I'd like more ideas on southern hospitality and what other people think of when they think about the South! Thanks, Shellie, for encouraging others. Your sweet spirit is evident!

Have a wonderful day!
Cammie
Hamstead,Maryland

(Dear Cammie, thanks for writing. I hope you can make it "home" to the South soon. ~smile~ Shellie)

_________

Dear Shellie,

I love visiting with you on your porch! Your emag reminds me of vivid memories of my childhood living with my Dad's sister in Augusta,Ga. (My Dad was away in World War II.) I was only three or four but I remember how sultry and hot it was at night. We'd sit out on my aunt's large front porch and listen to the neighbors sing negro spirituals. They were so beautiful one felt as though you'd be raptured any moment. To this day spirituals are such a blessing to me.

During the night the sounds of the crickets and katydids scared me and kept me awake. So, my Mom told me that the sounds they made were the Mama Crickets and Mama Katydids making clothes on their tiny sewing machines for their children. I thought that was cute. I rolled over and decided to let them sew into the night and went to sleep. As time went on Mom would embellish on what clothing they were making each evening to ease me into slumber.

One more story? Here in Oregon, we don't have "Lighting bugs." But, I remember collecting them, putting them in a jar with holes punched in the lids and using them as lanterns in our play house before we were called in for the eveing. Now, that was southern fun!

Hugs,
Edie Walker
Blachly, Oregon

(Dear Edie, I know all about "lightning bug lanterns". I still can't see one of the little guys without feeling a strong urge to locate a Mason Jar. ~smile~ Shellie)

____________

Dear Shellie,

Oh, my Lord! Your girly-girl definition with the lizard earrings is me all over. When I was little I used to "kiss" the lizards. My mama loves to go around telling everyone how funny it was when she saw me screaming and running thru the yard and then onto the porch and into the house with a lizard dangling from my lips. Lol! Thanks for reminding me of a wonderful childhood memory.

Kathy
Columbus, Georgia

(Ahhh...another soul-mate. I'm glad All Things Southern continues to bring us together. Thanks for writing, Kathy! Hugs,Shellie)
